The characterological function of the chronotope in A.P. Chekhov's story “Ionich

Abstract

The article is devoted to the functions and role of the chronotope to the inner state of Startsev in A. P. Chekhov's story “Ionich”. Such chronotope’s manifestations in the work as the seasons and the transition from day to night are analyzed. The article reveals the characterological function of the daily and calendar time: their connection with the mental state of the protagonist of the story and also describes other chronotope’s manifestations. The used methods are a system-holistic approach, including structural and semantic analysis and literary hermeneutics. The main provisions of this article can be used when studying a work at school, university and elective courses on the art’s work analysis.
