Contextual Emotiveness of Musical Metaphors in T. Capote's Story “A Christmas Memory”
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to explore the emotive potential of musical metaphors in T. Capote's short story “A Christmas Memory”. Special attention is paid to the analysis of emotional coloring in macro contexts. As a result of the study, it was found that in T. Capote’s story “A Christmas Memory” the emotive potential of the musical metaphors conveys an extraordinary sense of holiday and happiness. The main characters are able to see beauty and harmony in everyday things despite the hardships and difficulties: frozen berries, the struck of the clock, the light of stars, even the reproaches of their relatives. This emotive coloring is revealed step by step in microcontexts, gradually building up into a single emotiveness of the macrocontext.
