Research on the relationship between personal characteristics and Internet addiction of students

Abstract

The article presents the results of an empirical study of students’ personal characteristics and Internet addiction. The relevance of our research is due to the spread of Internet addiction in modern society, in particular, among young people in the student audience. Identifying the relationship between personal characteristics and the Internet addiction can contribute to the prevention of the phenomenon under study by implementing the appropriate program. Specific features of the Internet-dependent and interpersonal behavior, as well as character traits of students in the Humanities and technical areas of study are determined. The risk of developing Internet-dependent behavior was identified; personal characteristics are characterized by differences in indicators of extraversion-introversion, attachment-isolation, emotional instability – emotional stability; in interpersonal behavior, differences in expressed control; relationships between personal characteristics and indicators of Internet-dependent behavior were found. The results of the research will be used to create a program for secondary prevention of students' Internet addiction.
