Abstract

The article discovers the issues of Russian Far Eastern policy in the early twentieth century. The foreign policy circumstances of the Russian course (for example, "Great Game" between Russia and England and the aggravation of the situation in Europe) as well as personalized aspects of strategic decision before and during of the Russo-Japanese War are considered. The reasons for Russia's failure, which were primarily in the decision-making sphere (both strategic level and tactical levels) have been analyzed. The view of the Japanese elite on the events and typical behavior frames in a critical situation has been reconstructed. The consequences of this historical event, which can be considered the key moment in Russian history at the beginning of the 20th century, have been analyzed.
