Etymology of idioms as a basis for translation modulation of meaning
Abstract
The article analyzes perspectives of using etymology to specify meanings of units of translation language when it is implemented through the modulation technique. A comprehensive ontological characteristic of main features of lexico-grammatical transformation method is given, which leads translator to necessity of expanding linguistic awareness about object of translation, turn to such a section of linguistics as lexicology, and in particular, etymology, in process of their work. The field of application of transformation method in translation is considered separately, need for an integrated approach to translation as a multilateral process of reproducing contents of text, initially expressed in source language, in target language is justified. The main features of use of etymology in connection with the modulation technique as one of the main means necessary for finding adequate equivalents in translation are considered on material of the Russian and English languages.
